In the autumn of 1999 Brighton council ran a competition for children to design and create flowerbeds for the following summers displays in its parks. This competition was open to all junior and infant schools throughout the region.
Sarah entered with a friend from her class and as shown below, they were one of the sixteen designers that had them created in Brightons parks ready for the summer of the year 2000. All winning entries were invited to the launch of Brighton in bloom 2000 to view thier creations once completed.

'Reflections'

Brighton and Hove in Bloom Flowerbed Competition 2000

Dear Sarah & Gabrielle,

Thank you for entering our design a Flowerbed Competition. I am pleased to tell you the wonderful news that your design is one of sixteen that has been selected from this years entrants to be planted up as a flowerbed in Preston Park, Brighton or Hove Park, Hove.

The Judges comments for our finalist designs are below: -

"All the finalists produced excellent designs that will make good floral displays when planted up in the beds. The finalist's drawings will require very little interpretation by the flower bed designers because the entrants followed the guidelines very care fully. The designs are all abstract, and can be mirrored in at least one plane as requested by our 'reflections' theme. Some entrants developed this into two planes of symmetry so that the design can be viewed equally well from all four sides. NI the designs are simple and the choice of colour ranges from vivid bright designs to harmonious tones. None of the entrants labelled the drawings to indicate that they had considered the different heights of the plants. However, some of the designs do lend themselves to either 'dots' of height or tiered planting and the floral designers will use their skills to introduce this element into the final bed design.

The judges are all looking forward to seeing the finalist's designs when planted in the parks when the winning design will eventually chosen."

The flowerbed will be planted in early June 2000, so it will be flowering at its peak, in time for the final judging in August 2000.

We will be launching Brighton and Hove In Bloom in June 2000 and will invite you to attend nearer the time.

Well-done and Good Luck!

Yours sincerely,

Stella Richardson
